About Skin Care Our body's skin is a constantly changing environment made up of many different layers. Viewed under a microscope our skin has hills, mountains and valleys with liquids flowing through small openings to the surface and hair resembling swamp grass growing everywhere.
The aim of deep aromatherapy skin care products is to combat environmental stresses and to promote skin health and vitality. Skin Types Most people have at least two of the following distinct facial skin types: Dry Skin is caused by underactive or inactive oil glands that do not produce enough sebum to keep the skin naturally lubricated. This can leave a dull appearance, is often sensitive, taut and sometimes itchy. Moisturising and protecting the skin with rich oils and therapeutic essential oils serves to restore lustre, pliability and encourage cell regeneration. Oily Skin is caused by overactive sebaceous glands that produce excess oil, resulting in a greasy, slippery texture that is frequently accompanied by large clogged pores. This makes the skin prone to acne, where sebum is trapped inside pores. Products which are astringent, (contracts, tightens and binds tissues), sebum balancing and anti-bacterial benefit oily skin. Sensitive Skin can be any skin type that frequently reacts adversely to environmental conditions. It often requires special treatment in order to remain in good condition. This skin type is more prone to react adversely to synthetically manufactured cosmetics containing alcohol, artificial colours, preservatives and fragrance.
Combination Skin is a mixture of dry skin with oily patches on the T-zone where sebaceous glands are more prevalent. Mature Skin is usually very dry, lacking oil and moisture and developing wrinkles and lines. Most skins become less oily as they grow older. Environmental triggers have a more detrimental effect if appropriate skin-care has not been adhered to. Couperose Skin appears as small, dilated, winding, bright red blood vessels on the cheeks, around the nose and sometimes on the chin. It occurs as a result of poor elasticity of the capillary wall and is most obvious on fair skin. Couperose is aggravated by extremes of temperature, health, stress, poor nutrition, exercise, smoking, alcohol and the use of products containing harsh chemicals and alcohol. Acne attacks regions of the skin containing large sebaceous glands, the face, back, and upper anterior chest. Acne can be related to both hormonal and dietary causes. The basic cause of acne is an increase in oestrogen production in the female and androgen in the male. This increases the secretion of the sebaceous glands. The sebum produced can be broken down to fatty acids which, together with the bacteria, cause an inflammatory response in the sebaceous glands resulting in acne. Essential oils can be used to clear the infection, reduce and balance the amount of sebum produced, and promote the growth of new tissue. |
